Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
